Espostoa sp. 'golden'

Date: 2000 January 24
Location: above Balsas, 2100m, Amazonas, Peru

Travelling over the pass from Leimebamba towards Balsas, we found these plants some way down the slopes from the road at an altitude of around 2100m. Possibly these are referable to Espostoa calva, but this begs the question as to what are the plants with white cephalium in the Utcubamba valley which I have called Espostoa calva.

The name 'golden' is not official - I just needed something to call them. Indeed the cephalium has golden wool, whereas the plant body is devoid of wool.

Below, a view of the cephalium, and at right the entire of one of the huge plants. You can just see Jorge Galindo part way up it trying to get a better view.
