Strombocactus disciformis ssp. esperanzae Strombocactus disciformis ssp. esperanzae
Date: 1996 October 30
Location: Guanajuato

This subspecies of Strombocactus was described by Glass and S. Arias, in the British Cactus & Succulent Journal, Volume 14, No. 4, December 1996. Its most distinctive difference from ssp. disciformis is the deep magenta flower (pictured in the journal). It is named for Sra. Esperanza Benavides de Valásquez, a local community leader, who helped by locating plants in flower accessible enough to be photographed.

It is pictured below (left) growing with Turbinicarpus alonsoi (right).
