Copiapoa cinerea var. gigantea
Date: 2001 February 12
Location: coastal Chile, between Paposo and Taltal
The plants of Copiapoa cinerea vary as one moves along
the Chilean coast, and among the names at times applied at times
to the variants in this area are Copiapoa haseltoniana
and Copiapoa cinerea var. gigantea which sometimes
forms elongated columnar plants.
Here the plants can be seen close to the sea, where there are
spectacular views (even for the non-cactophile!). Bird-droppings
have coated some of the rocks in a snow-white deposit.
Clarke Brunt, with some of the plants to the north of Paposo.
Columnar Eulychnia plants can be seen in the background.
